Key dates in the history of IUT Lyon1

Brief history of IUT Lyon1, in short...

1940 - Creation by Jean GALLET of the Accelerated Training Center for Metallurgy (CFA) at 107 rue Dedieu in Villeurbanne. The establishment applies the teaching method of the Swiss Alfred Carrard.

1945 - The CFA is transformed and becomes an Apprenticeship Center.

1964 - Transfer of the establishment to brand new premises, 17 rue de France in Villeurbanne. The CFA is now called Groupe d'Enseignement Technique de la Métallurgie (GETM)

1967 - Creation of the Mechanical Engineering and Production Engineering (GMP) department in the premises of GETM, which at the same time becomes the State Technical High School. The IUT originally includes a dual department of Mechanical Engineering and Production Engineering.

1970 – The GMP department of Rue de France becomes IUT B - Transfer of the Technical High School to Vénissieux. The establishment passes entirely under the management of the Jean Moulin University. That same year, the Electrical Engineering and Industrial Computing (GEII) department was transferred from La Martinière to Rue de France within IUT B - Opening of the Marketing Techniques (TC) department on the Rue de France premises

1981 – Retirement of Jean GALLET, founder of the site and Director of IUT B.

1992 – New department in the establishment with the opening of the Industrial Engineering and Maintenance (GIM) department 2010 – Birth of IUT LYON 1 following the merger of IUT A (Villeurbanne la Doua and Bourg en Bresse sites) with IUT B (Villeurbanne Gratte-Ciel site) It was also that year that a new department of Industrial Systems Marketing Techniques (TC-SI) was opened on the Villeurbanne Gratte-Ciel site. The site now includes 5 departments and welcomes around 2,300 students.

2017 – The Cirque Imagine will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the creation of the IUTs of Lyon.

2021 – Transition of studies within the IUTs from 2 years to 3 years with the launch of the BUT (University Bachelors of Technology)

The history of the IUT LYON 1, which was not written in a single day as you can see by reading these lines, does not end in 2023.

By developing the modest CFA of the 1940s into the university center that has today become the IUT LYON1, Jean GALLET showed the way to future generations.

Everything remains to be written for the IUT LYON1 to become a national and international reference among the largest university institutions in the world.
